When we read a book we imagine the characters and imagine them in their own world and try to see and feel and enter the world of the book. The writer's job is to give us a feeling of what it is like to be there. It can't be just about the story, it has to be about the characters too. That is why we want to tell our friends people stories about them.
We want to see them in their lives and know what they are doing. We want to get into their minds and make them live for a while in ours.
